The plants become symbols of resilience: deeply rooted, weathered by their environment, yet continuing to grow, adapt and bring colour to an otherwise unforgiving landscape.

Working in an abstract impressionistic style, colour is at the heart of my practice. Rather than attempting to faithfully represent the landscape, I respond to its energy, atmosphere and emotional presence. I use unexpected combinations of colour alongside earthy, natural tones, allowing vibrant hues to emerge and push against the muted colours of the dry country.

My paintings are built through many layers of acrylic paint. I work intuitively, adding, obscuring, scraping back and responding to what is revealed beneath each layer. Earlier marks and colours remain partially visible, creating depth, texture and a sense of history within the surface. These layers reflect the landscape itself — weathered, complex and continually changing.

Ultimately, this collection is a celebration of life that persists in difficult conditions. It is an exploration of the unexpected beauty found within harshness, and of the colour, movement and resilience of the Australian flora that continues to endure.

About the artist

Annabelle Brockman is a Western Australian artist whose practice has been shaped by a lifelong connection to nature and the distinctive Australian landscape. Having painted for many years, she has exhibited widely across Perth and in regional galleries throughout Western Australia. Working from a shared studio space, Annabelle regularly exhibits alongside other artists while continuing to develop her practice and work on commissioned pieces. Her paintings are inspired by the beauty, resilience and rawness of the Australian environment, particularly the contrasts found within its harsh and often unforgiving landscapes.

Over time, her style has evolved into a distinctive form of abstract impressionism, with colour at the centre of her practice. Through expressive mark-making, movement and unexpected colour combinations, Annabelle creates vibrant interpretations of the natural world that capture its energy and atmosphere rather than simply its physical form.
