About the artist
Vinisha is a textile and mixed media artist working under the name Sisa Studio. With a background in Creative Arts, specialising in visual media, she has previously worked across the visual arts, design and community cultural development. Her creative practice draws inspiration from her Indian and Indonesian cultural heritage, as well as the interiors, architecture, neighbourhoods, and communities that surround her.
Based in Boorloo, Vinisha creates collage works, paintings, and hand-tufted textile pieces using 100% New Zealand wool yarn sourced directly from the factory floor. Sisa Studio began as a project to repurpose tonnes of excess yarn produced as a by-product of the carpet manufacturing process. The name “Sisa,” meaning “remainder” or “remnant” in Indonesian, reflects this foundation. Working within the constraints of the available colours and quantities of this surplus yarn, Vinisha designs and hand-tufts each piece in response to what remains.
