About the artwork

'Manarola part of the Cinque Terre in Italy - from hill out to sea. I had always wanted to paint in Italy, and in 2011 I got my chance I could not believe how beautiful this trip would be. I am sitting just below the grape vines above the village, painting this magical scene.'

About the artist

Ralph Baker is a Perth-based artist and illustrator whose award-winning work has been collected throughout Australia. Painting predominantly 'en plein air', Ralph captures lively landscapes inspired by his travels and everyday surroundings, often filled with people, dogs and moments of daily life. His expressive watercolour paintings are known for their movement, energy and touches of gold leaf, creating works that are both joyful and relatable.

From 1994 to 2004, Ralph operated Ralph Baker Illustration, providing illustration services to hospitals, universities and private medical companies while raising his two daughters. His painting Shelby 1 was a finalist in the 2013 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. Ralph currently manages the Medical Multimedia Design Department at Royal Perth Hospital.

‘Ralph has a highly developed style that is full of creativity and quirks. Capturing recognisable locations with the life and happenings that occurs within them, they feel joyous and human-like.

The little touches we love, include handwritten stories and notes within the artwork (sometimes by Ralph or people passing by), Ralph’s colour palettes that he includes on the bottom of the artworks, his squiggles and loose mark-making as well as touches of gold leaf. For Ralph, the gold-leaf is a representation of glimmers caused by the sunlight. All works are presented beautifully - floated and mounted on white, framed in oak, under glass.'
