These canvases are painted with Freya's memories of the Walyalup region: a place where she grew up and returned after several years abroad to raise her own child.

As she pushed her baby in the pram on their long and frequent walks through the city, She witnessed the nasturtiums burst into life, the tendrils of pig face crawl and waterfall over the limestone, and the sour grass flowers bobbing and dancing in the wind - and she was transported back to her childhood.

It seemed that at some point during adolescence she started to believe that these plants were weeds or nuisances. But seeing them once again through the eyes of a child felt utterly joyous. She remembered what they really were: tasty, exciting, colourful, beautiful, harbingers of spring.

Nasturtiums, pig face, and sour grass have become important and recurring motifs in her art but this body of work is her most concentrated and large-scale exploration of them to date.

Freya Hall is an Australian artist based in Walyalup (Fremantle). Her practice is characterised by bold colour, energetic lines and a contemporary expressionist sensibility. Through her art, Hall investigates cognition, motivation, and memory. She is fascinated by the human experience, is deeply nostalgic, and finds joy in the imperfect.
