About the artwork
Swimming in the sea gives rise to a sense of one’s own wateriness and a fading of boundaries between the depth beneath, the reflection of the sky, one’s body of water and the ocean's body of water. The surface of this work holds the tension of layered watery scenes, mimicking the way the ocean shifts, disappears, reappears.
About the artist
Nicole Steenhof is a visual artist currently working with painting and sculpture based in Boorloo, Perth. Propelled by an interest in ocean studies, Steenhof works towards an embodied painting process, alert to sensations beyond sight. Her sculpture work is made from found and post consumer items, concentrating on form and connection to histories of oceans.
In her latest collection, she is developing ideas on how we engage with the agential life of the sea with tenderness, to relearn connection.
