About the artwork:
Gai paints and sculpts ‘somewheres’. These places exist in her mind’s eye and are conjured from observation and memory.
Her studio lies in a rural setting in Western Australia’s southwest region and is surrounded by hills, creeks, birds and lots of trees. It is here, where nature eases its way into the artworks she creates, as if by osmosis. The natural world has always and continues to surprise, astound and inspire her.
When she is painting or sculpting there are usually two themes that she subjectively contemplates; beauty and truth. She employs an eclectic mix of medium and approaches, where sometimes she is drawn to bending metal or sculpting an idea from clay, yet at other times she can only resolve an idea with paint on a two-dimensional surface.
All artworks are mini snapshots of an attempt to capture a fleeting thought, feeling or idea that cannot be expressed with words.
About the artist:
Australian artist Gai Saunders is a painter and sculptor whose art practice has been shaped by stories, poetry, music, philosophical ideas and current affairs. She lives on a rural property in a beautiful setting where she works in her home studio.
Her paintings depict a merging of real and imagined scenes while her sculptural works blur the boundaries of these two and three dimensional worlds. Material and process driven, she combines a range of media to express her ideas.
Since her first solo exhibition in 1993, Gai has been involved in many group exhibitions and other collaborative projects. She has been a finalist in a variety of art awards and her work can be found in many private collections in Australia and internationally. Most recently, Gai was selected to exhibit at The Royal Academy of Art, London in the 2025 Summer Exhibition.
