About the artwork
With a painterly field of marks that oscillate between textures of grit and fluidity, this painting slips between abstraction and reality. Floating on your back in the ocean for long enough will result in a slippage; a sensation of being water within water, an awareness of becoming undone in the Indian Ocean.
About the artist
Nicole Steenhof is a visual artist currently working with painting and sculpture based in Boorloo, Perth. Propelled by an interest in ocean studies, Steenhof works towards an embodied painting process, alert to sensations beyond sight. Her sculpture work is made from found and post consumer items, concentrating on form and connection to histories of oceans.
In her latest collection, she is developing ideas on how we engage with the agential life of the sea with tenderness, to relearn connection.
