About the artwork

Maryann's work is inspired by the raw beauty and ever-changing movement of the ocean, particularly the Ningaloo Reef and the remote coastline of Western Australia further north.

Through layered collage, texture and colour, she explores the rhythm of waves, currents and organic marine forms. The tactile surfaces echo the shifting nature of the sea, capturing moments of energy, light and stillness.

Rather than depicting a specific place, her work seeks to evoke the feeling of being immersed in the vastness and beauty of the ocean.

About the artist

Maryann Devereux is a Western Australian artist whose work is inspired by the ocean and the distinctive landscapes and organic forms of the Pilbara and Kimberley.

Exhibiting since 1996, Maryann works primarily in acrylic, combining moulding paste and collage with handmade papers to create richly textured, tactile surfaces. Her practice has evolved from her early career in cartographic and town planning drafting into a more intuitive exploration of colour, movement, texture and form.

Living on the Western Australian coast and travelling through the northwest continue to provide an enduring source of inspiration. Her paintings reflect a deep connection to the natural environment and an ongoing exploration of its beauty, strength and diversity.
