About the artwork:

Julie's work exists in the space between order and instinct. Working across abstract painting, ceramics and sculpture, she explores the quiet dialogue between intricate pattern and raw, natural materials. These materials each bring their own history and character, creating a balance of refinement and unpredictability.

Pattern is central to her practice. Through repetition and attention to detail, she creates surfaces that invite stillness and close observation, while the warmth and imperfections of natural materials remind us that beauty often lies in what is unresolved.

Experimentation with form is at the heart of her process. The female head appears as a recurring form throughout this body of work—sometimes recognisable, sometimes abstracted—becoming a vessel for strength and vulnerability. Each piece evolves through making and responding, allowing the materials to shape the final outcome.

Quiet Tension celebrates the balance between opposites: precision and freedom, softness and strength, movement and stillness. She invites viewers to slow down, look closely, and discover the subtle relationships between pattern, material, and form.

Julie works from Studio Jules, her studio in the Perth Hills, where she continues to explore new materials, forms, and techniques while creating collections for exhibitions and private collectors.
