About the artwork:
Kim’s passion for the forest began in the late 1990s through camping and hiking trips to Walpole in Western Australia, where she witnessed the extensive logging of old-growth forests. This experience became a turning point in her artistic practice, inspiring a strong desire to care for the natural environment and protect what remains of our forests. Maple explores these themes through an abstract approach, pushing design concepts through unusual colours, shapes and forms that come together to create dynamic compositions. Painting is an integral part of who she is, taking her into another world and providing a space for both passion and discovery. For Maple, the creative process is also a constant mental challenge—an ongoing exploration of new ideas, possibilities and ways of expressing her connection to the natural environment. Her practice is continually evolving as she pushes herself to create fresh and engaging work.
About the artist:
Kim Maple is an established Western Australian artist whose practice is shaped by a lifetime of experimentation, exploration and a deep passion for colour, form and composition. Trained in graphic design at Perth Technical School, she later moved to Melbourne, completing a Master of Arts in Printmaking at Monash University and exhibiting in galleries across Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Her practice has evolved through pastel, printmaking, oils and acrylics, with a strong emphasis on abstraction.
A pivotal influence was her experience of the old-growth forests around Walpole in the late 1990s, which inspired a powerful body of work responding to the beauty and destruction of the natural environment. Today, Maple continues to explore still life, nature and abstract forms, working intuitively with colour and composition to create expressive, evolving paintings.
